Why Girls Feel Safe on Campus

Jamia Millia Islamia is a university that contributes to society by countering several societal issues, of which gender inequality is one. As a university, it not only sets itself as an eminent educational institution, but is also among those working to empower women.

As a girl studying in Jamia, I feel safe on the campus because it has an efficient security system. Security guards are placed at all entry gates to keep out the anti-social elements. Any kind of misdemeanor is immediately looked upon. Our former vice-chancellor, Najeeb Jung, had even appointed guards to walk girls back to their hostels because of the complaints of harassment faced by girls on the street on their way back to the hostels. The security guards take immediate action when they encounter cases of misbehaviour. We girls free safe to move about anywhere on campus.
Unlike several other institutions, Jamia is very sensitive towards its girl students. It provides a strong sense of equality and freedom to girls. Jamia regularly organises lectures and discussions on issues related to women, and invites eminent personalities to talk about those issues. To offer safe accommodation to more girls in the future, Jamia is building a new hostel for girls for which Sonia Gandhi was invited to lay the foundation.
It does a remarkable job in educating and imparting the very basic principles of gender equality and sensitivity which have become the necessity of today’s world. These principles and teachings play an important role in making men better human beings.
It strengthens and promotes self-confidence in girls, and encourages them to stand as strong competitors against those who underestimate their abilities. Because of this we have seen girls outshine boys in several competitions. To provide opportunities to Muslim girls and instill in them the will to educate themselves, Jamia has arranged for special quota for Muslim girls.
Parents feel secure in sending their daughters to study at Jamia in comparison to sending them to other universities. My parents too feel relieved because Jamia provides safety for girls. I believe Jamia contributes to society by promoting women empowerment and fostering male students who will stand by women in their hour of need, instead of giving in to impertinence. Jamia teaches us to stand shoulder to shoulder with boys and to not feel inferior to them. As so many others, I too take pride in studying in this renowned institution.

Need change in mindset for making women safer: Sonia Gandhi

Voicing her shock and pain over unabated incidents of abuse and molestation of women, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday made a strong plea for a change in mindset to ensure a safe environment for them. Laying the foundation stone for a girls’ hostel on the Jamia Milia Islamia University campus, Gandhi said that the change will come from our homes, schools and universities.

“We have been shocked by the violence that girls and women encounter on the streets and even in their homes. Of course, this is not universal, but it is there widespread.
“And It pains me that as a society, we have failed to counter it and create a secure environment where girls and women can live and flourish without constantly having to live in fear of abuse and molestation,” Gandhi said.
While the government, Parliament and institutions like the police have to discharge their role, society at large also needed to change its mindset, the UPA chairperson said.
“And we must all become all the more proactive. There can be no better points for this change than within our own families, our schools and universities,” Gandhi said.
She said that a women’s hostel will also create a greater sense of security for female students and lauded the institution for empowering women and helping them in fulfilling their dreams so that they can find a “productive, secure and self-confident place” in society.
“Nothing can achieve this better than a sound modern education. You have today taken a big step towards swelling the rank of women who aspire, enabling them who are privileged to be students and scholars here, to break through the barriers that the society force upon them to soar new heights and make their families and country proud,” Gandhi said.
Striking an instant rapport with the students, Gandhi said in a lighter vein that she was delighted to be there for another reason that “I can bunk my classes” besides getting an opportunity to be with them.
Gandhi lauded the long standing commitment of the university to the education of women recalling that its four hostels are named after four remarkable women.
She also expressed happiness over the university’s decision to name a ground in the university after cricketer late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, whom she described as “arguably India’s greatest captain and without doubt one of the most charismatic sportspersons”.
“Now that you are declared a minority institution, you have an even greater opportunity to serve the cause of the community and other underprivilleged sections of the society…This is a very big challenge,” Gandhi said.
She also chose the occassion to flag the old ties the institution had with her families and the appreciation India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had for it.
Jamia Millia Islamia Vice Chancellor Najeeb Jung profusely thanked Gandhi for “vigoroulsy” pursuing with the government for the construction of the girls’hostel, which he said that about which he had told Gandhi eight months back during a chance conversation.
The Vice Chancellor also lauded Gandhi for her left of the centre tilt to policies at a time when “market forces” rule the roost.

Sonia ‘bunks’ politics for a day to be with Jamia students

After a politically volatile week that saw the exit of her party’s two union ministers, Congress President Sonia Gandhi today took time off to “bunk” political work and spend a while with students of Jamia Millia Islamia University here.
“…My young friends, students. I am delighted to be here in this magnificent university..I am also delighted because I don’t often get the opportunity to spend a little while with students and for another reason and that is I can bunk my class,” Gandhi said with a smile after laying the foundation stone for a girls’ hostel there.

Sporting a light green sari, Gandhi arrived at the venue ten minutes before the scheduled time.
She expressed her happiness over the university’s plan to name a ground in the campus after cricket legend Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.
“The VC has told me that it is going to be named after Mansoor Ali Khan, arguably India’s greatest cricket captain and without doubt one of our most charismatic sportspersons,” Gandhi said.
She also had a brief chat with students in the ground immediately after the conclusion of the function. However, she had left by the time the journos could approach her for a bite.
For the last few days, Congress has been trying to dispel the perception of differences between the party and the government and dismissing reports of a rift between Gandhi and the Prime Minister over the exit of Union Ministers.

Confessions is all the Rage at colleges and Universities

If you are part of an active student community online, then you probably have already come across a ‘Confessions’ facebook page for your faculty or department. And if you haven’t, then don’t worry, somebody in your department or faculty is probably already thinking of setting one up.
For those unfamiliar with the concept, a Confessions facebook page is the latest internet fad gripping colleges and universities all over India. It’s a facebook page where people can confess their feelings for others anonymously. The anonymity comes from a Google form that can record your confession anonymously. The administrator of the confessions page then takes those confessions, vets them, and publishes them on the confessions facebook page for everybody to read.

The trend seems to have started at Oxford University only a few months ago. The founding date on the Oxford confessions page is November, 2012. But it seems the fad really picked up when American universities got into the action. Stanford, Harvard, MIT all have their confessions page. And it wasn’t long then for Indian colleges and universities to get onto the band wagon. Almost every notable university and college in India now has one; and Jamia is no exception.
In the past few weeks, students of several faculty and departments at Jamia have created their confessions page on facebook. It is not certain which faculty or department was the first one to create a confessions page at Jamia, but what we are certain of is that students of Faculty of Engineering were among the earliest, and seem to have the most popular confessions page in Jamia.
The founding date for their confessions page is Feb. 27th, and in about two weeks their page have garnered over 700 ‘Likes’ and have close to a 1000 confessions.
A typical confession on this page can read something like this:
“i like a girl from architecture , i dnt knw her name or nethng abt her .I use to watch her daily in our canteen , today she was in yellow sleeveless top and blue jeans . Please only once i want to interact with u then u can decide on your own whether u want to date me or not .If u r reading this and also want to meet me then pls rply to me here or anonymously . If sm1 else know abt her please tell me her name i will b oblidge to u ppl .she z architecture. #male”
Although a typical confession might be a confession of love, which was the purported idea behind such a page, confessions however, are not restricted to confessions of love. Students are saying all sorts of stuff that they normally would not say with their identities known.
Take this one for instance:
“Dear Hostel waalo’n aur batla house ke tuchchey chichhoro’n
College mein INSAAN banker aaya karo
I mean, shakal dhoker, subah uth’ker kapdey change karker (naaki wahi pehanker jismein raat ko soye they) aur haaan, most important, SHOES pehanker, not in ghinauni CHAPPALS
Tumhari wajah se JMI ka naam badnaaam hai chichhhoro’n !
Apni nahi, to humari to socho ! #female”
